National Portrait Gallery seek for young and talented

August 19, 2011

BP Portrait Award: Next Generation is a dynamic project inspiring 14–19-year-olds about portraiture through the BP Portrait Award.

In the lead up to the London 2012 Olympic and Paralympic Games, Next Generation encourages young artists by opening up opportunities to meet and gain insights from past BP Portrait Award artists, make and share their own artwork and connect with other young people.

What is BP Portrait Award: Next Generation?

Inspired by the London 2012 Olympic Games and Paralympic Games, BP Portrait Award: Next Generation is an exciting three-year project opening up free opportunities for 14–19-year-olds to engage with portraiture through the BP Portrait Award. Encouraging young artists of the future, from first time Gallery visitors to those who want to make art their career, BP Portrait Award: Next Generation connects them with other young people interested in portraiture and past BP Portrait Award winning artists.

In 2010, over one hundred young people from across London, including the five 2012 Host Boroughs, and over twenty BP Portrait Award artists took part through a series of short Taster Sessions and three-day Summer Schools.
I’m 14 to 19 years old, how can I get involved?

This year, there are different ways to meet practising artists, explore the BP Portrait Award 2011 and create your own portraiture. Try your hand at portraiture drawing in Taster Sessions over London 2012 Open Weekend and if you’re keen for a more intensive experience, apply for a place at one of our Summer Schools in August. Summer Schools feature oil painting, life drawing and other creative portraiture techniques over a three-day course. Exciting news is that our guest star life drawing model will be Shelly Woods, 2008 Paralympic Games medal winner and one of the UK’s top wheelchair racers with her sights set on London 2012. BP Portrait Award: Next Generation moves to Scotland with the first regional workshops at Aberdeen Art Gallery later in the year. Find out about how to take part here.

Digital content is a new way to get involved in BP Portrait Award: Next Generation this year. Display and share your portraiture talent online, go behind the scenes to hear about what it’s like to be in the BP Portrait Award in video interviews with artists filmed by young people, and vote in our online portraiture polls.

If you were part of Taster Sessions or Summer Schools last year, contact us to find out how else you can get involved.
