The “app phenomenon” is an incredible success story. The development of smartphones and the applications designed for them has redefined the future of mobility. Smart devices and applications have now advanced to the status of media, and it is very difficult to imagine everyday life without them any more.
Current estimations say that there are around 1,725,000 apps circulating in the world of smartphones and tablets. The explosive growth in apps is structured by many categories, such as “games”, “news”, or “sport”. But although the mobile applications have become the symbol of a global, collective creativity, and although many developments excel in interactivity and intermediality, for which art paved the way, no category of “art” exists on the various app-platforms.
To generate and direct attention to artistic productions in the app format, which is entirely appropriate considering their dynamics and distribution, the ZKM | Karlsruhe, the CyberForum, and their partners organized the first international AppArtAward.
With this award, the three partners want to establish apps as a new form of art.
Artists, designers, and developers from all parts of the world have the possibility, from March 11 to May 12, 2013, to enter their developments in the competition. Each prize is oriented on the current technological developments and reflects the innovative productions among developers in the specific areas of information technology. All three prizes are in the amount of € 10,000. Premiered will be the best artworks in the app format for smartphones and tablets, which present creative software solutions in the categories.
Artistic Innovation Prize
This comprehensive category is directed at all creative, innovative app developments, that make use of the artistic design playroom of the medium.
Special Prize for Crowd Art
“Crowd Art” refers both to deterritorialized, networked cloud computing, and to the collective creativity that is enabled by it. Crowd Art further refers to the transition of the analog age of production to the age of digital distribution. Apps on mobile end products are the global experimental labs for this new art form.
Special Prize for Augmented Reality Art
The applications for “Augmented Reality” testify to a specific kind of computer-generated, supplemental information. Virtual objects that intersect with real space form an added dimension and expand our possibilities of perception. The creative further development of this technology in the mobile area stands at the focus of the Augmented Reality Art Award.
